Robust Approaches to Compressed Sensing in parallel MRI.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a medical imaging technique to picture the internal body structure using strong magnetic fields and radio frequency pulses. The data acquisition process associated with MRI is highly time consuming. Solution towards fast imaging is to reduce the number of acquired samples in the k-space (frequency plane where data is acquired). This, however, results in various types of artifacts which then needs to be accounted for, during the image reconstruction process. Compressed Sensing (CS-MRI) and Parallel Imaging (pMRI) are two such image reconstruction problems in MRI intended towards improving this inherently slow acquisition time.

My primary research focus is to bring together CS-MRI and pMRI efficiently to accelerate the imaging process. Provided that the signal is sparse in some domain, compressed sensing shows that the signal can be reconstructed from fewer samples than what Nyquist-Shannon sampling limit suggests. While pMRI uses an array of receiver coils and captures undersampled k-space data, CS-MRI relies on random undersampling, sparsifying transforms and solving underdetermined systems.

I'm also working on developing a spatially adaptive phase mask for venous enhancement in Susceptibility Weighted MRI along with Dr. Joseph Suresh Paul, Dr. Jaladhar Neelavalli, and UdayKrishnamurthy, Department of Biomedical Engineering and Radiology, Wayne State University, Detroit MI, USA.
